As an agent for Verizon Wireless Service, we have seen a variety of dilemmas that our customers face regarding their cell phone service and handsets.

We’d like to focus on the issue of cell phone insurance.

We all are facing tough economic times and look of every possible avenue to save money and we do that by cutting out non-essential expenses.

We all, well at least most of us, depend on our cell phones. We use them for just about everything including GPS navigation, browsing the internet, text messaging, checking email, and even making phone calls! The time eventually arrives when our beloved phone wears out and we are faced with getting a new one.  So, we trot on down to our favorite Verizon indirect agent at Taos Mountain Electronics where the staff helps us to choose the phone that best fits our needs and uses for a smooth transition to a brand new phone until………..

“Would you like insurance on your phone?”

Uhhhh…. how much? Do I need that? I don’t know, why should I? I’ve never lost my phone, I’ve never damaged my phone, I’ve never had one stolen.

Now wait, before you make that decision, let us tell you about our experiences from this side of the counter.

Insurance can cost anywhere between $4.49 to $7.99 a month, depending on which phone you chose. And after you consider what plan you will be on, the additional 5-8 dollars a month just doesn’t sit well with you.

But you’ve just got your phone and all is well. You’re hanging out with your friends at the park, you lay our phone down on the table and you go about visiting and moving about when suddenly it begins to rain. You run and grab your phone, wiping the rain off as you head for shelter.

A little bit later you go to use your phone and all you see is a blank screen. Uh, oh, this is  not good.  So, you go to your favorite Verizon agent at Taos Mountain Electronics because you know they take care of their customers. They pull up your account, it has only been a short time since you got the upgrade and new phone so you can’t upgrade again….. what about insurance?! Oh, wait, I declined the insurance because it was too expensive. Now what do I do?

Unfortunately, your recourse in this situation is quite limited. Typically, you’ll be facing the aspect of purchasing a replacement phone at retail cost. That could be as little as $199.99.

So, think about this: If you are paying $7.99 a month for twenty months which is typically how long it takes between the time you renew the contract and the time you become eligible for the next upgrade, you’ve only paid $159.80 in monthly premiums. You’d pay  your deductible for a claim and still it would be less than paying retail cost of a replacement handset.

You may never need it but can you afford the cost and aggrevation of doing without this insurance?

For all the confused and misinformed that were awaiting the analog cut off of their antenna signals, it did NOT happen. Here in Taos, we are provided our antenna signals through low wattage translators which were not include in the digital switch over by the FCC. For all those people who purchased their digital converters and saw nothing happen at the switch over…you still have to wait. The only channels that are digital and have been for the past 2 years are PBS 5.1 and 5.2. Some of you who have converter boxes hooked up and have lost your analog signals, disconnect and go back to analog. We will post when we find out if and when the conversion is coming on our system.

Gary giving away another phone

Today, we gave away another cell phone. This time it was in celebration of our 20th anniversary. The lucky recipient was Robert S. who got the phone of his choice just for being the 20th person to get a phone.

What we are doing – Every 20th person buying a cell phone will get a phone of their choice, absolutely FREE! This is just another way of celebrating our 20th year of doing business here in Taos in addition to the other sales we are running. We thank the community for your loyal patronage.
